SNSD as MCs For A New Corner in "Sunday Night"

SNSD will be stepping out as MCs in MBC's "Sunday Sunday Night". On the 15th, a spokesperson from MBC had stated that the SNSD members will have to accomplish certain missions during the show but the concrete concept or the title of the corner haven't been decided yet.

SNSD will start participating in next week's recordings. It'll be determined by the viewers' reactions whether the program will be regular or not.

After "Sehbaqui (Change The World)" changed its timeslot, only "Daemang" and "We Got Married" are the only shows left on the lineup. The first episode of "Daemang" on the 29th of March attained ratings below 5%. The show had been struggling with ratings ever since then.

[04.15.09] SNSD as MCs, Can they save the crisis of MBC's "Sunday Night"?

Filming of the new corner will start as of next week.

Group SNSD will be stepping out as "relievers" for "Sunday Sunday Night" which had recently been suffering a crisis.

Recently, SNSD had been chosen as the MCs for a new corner (title yet to be announced) in MBC's entertainment program "Sunday Sunday Night". All the nine members will be working together as MCs as they try to catch the viewers' attention on Sunday evenings.

A spokesperson from MBC's entertainment department had made a public statement saying, "SNSD will be visiting various locations and will have to accomplish the missions that are given out to them. We are still currently in the process of discussing the details. Filming will start as of next week. "

SNSD's nine members will be participating on the show on a rotational basis. It will be difficult situation for Yoona, who is currently working on MBC's Wednesday-Thursday miniseries "Cinderella Man" (script by Jo Yoonyeong, produced by Yoo Jeongjun) , to join "Sunday Sunday Night".

Furthermore, the spokesperson said, "Since there are nine members with varying schedules, the participation of each member are subjected to change. We're considering visiting Yoona at the filming location of "Cinderella Man" for the first episode."

Many are interested whether the participation of SNSD in "Sunday Sunday Night" would be able to save it after recently falling in a period of stagnation. "Daemang" and "We Got Married", the first and second parts of "Sunday Sunday Night" respectively, both got low ratings of 3.4% and 8.4% after airing on the 12th.

Another spokesperson said, "SNSD is an icon that has a lot of attention from today's generation. I think they will be successful in pulling in young viewers." and thus showing his expectations.

Whether the new corner will continue to air or not will be determined by the viewers' reaction after the first broadcast in which SNSD will be participating in is aired.

You must beat SNSD's Gee, which conquered Tell Me, to live

The childish group became a reality.

This is one party's evaluation about SNSD's Gee craze.

SNSD completed their mini-album activities at SBS Inkigayo on the 29th. The mini-album with the title track, Gee, was released in January and dominated the music industry.

Despite the music industry's worst depression, the album sold 100k copies. The 'Gee' ring tones and caller rings have been downloaded 120k time and there are more than 35k Cyworld minihompys with it as the background music. The estimated profit exceeds 40 billion won.

The explosive popularity of Gee doesn't end here. On KBS Music Bank, they've been 1st place for 9 consecutive weeks. In just a little over two months, they've dominated every music program there is. On radios, satellite-broadcasts, and cable-broadcasts, Gee has been played 1536 times. Singles are relatively short and the music industry's myth that best-sellers are steady sellers is broken, which isn't easy to convert, has been broken.

△ Goodbye Tell Me madness = Truthfully, SNSD had a successful debut and first album activities but was slightly shortcoming. This is because unlike Wonder Girls with Tell Me, which caused a syndrome throughout society, SNSD did not have an early hit single that shook the music industry.

But Gee has become a mega hit that took the madness out with one hit. The addictive hook and fast beat and the overall aspect of Gee has made the world 'Into A New World', gaining recognition from the military and the synergy effect of Gee has created the Gee syndrome. The song and lyrics portrays an image of a girl in love and has a graceful melody line and the different 9 members' vocals were arranged appropriately.

One party involved in the music industry said, "To tell the truth, I didn't like Gee at first." and "Once SNSD came on stage, the song and dance combined to show SNSD's energy. The song was good but the dance was superb and their singing abilities have improved.

Of course, Gee's success is all thanks to SNSD's huge fandom and their influence. But because of this, the Gee syndrome is also devaluated. The problem is the idol singers that have appeared in our nation's music industry have all had experiences basking in their fandoms with similar conditions.

S.E.S. and Fin.K.L had a fan base with preposterous amounts of male fans that could easily overpower SNSD's. But unlike 'Tell Me' or 'Gee', they couldn't hit jackpots and become social phenomenons. For people in their teens, 20s, 30s, and middle-ages to recognize a group and their single's popularity at the same time is extremely rare.

Either a group is remembered because the song is good enough, or the song gets stuck in peoples' heads, showing how excellent the group's talents are. SNSD's Gee shows their potential and although they're idols, it is evident through the quality of the album, that it has been taken into careful consideration and lots of care went into it. Mainstream music critics have evaluated more generously than expected.

△ SNSD's recognition is preserved even when SNSD doesn't appear. = Although SNSD's official activities has ended, it seems SNSD's recognition is strong, without any major hits. Taeyeon DJs on MBC Radio 'Chinhan Chingoo' (Close Friends), her OSTs seemed to yearn for spotlight and she has sung two digital singles of which have become hits.

Yoona will be coming in MBC's Cinderella Man on TV. Before SNSD released Gee, Yoona appeared in KBS daily drama 'You Are My Destiny', becoming in charge of the group's recognition. Once again, SNSD fans will be able to boost viewer ratings. The problem is whether or not and how much her acting skills will improve. When the growth curve is fast, a movie debut could come faster than expected.

Tiffany has already released a digital single. On the 26th, the digital single 'By Myself' was released and is an OST for SBS's Jang Myung Go, and as soon as it was released, it became very popular. A charismatic, powerful voice that frequently sings pop and punky genres. Tiffany was only hidden by Taeyeon, and her vocals are pretty decent.

Jessica and Seohyun along with Tiffany have formed 'Jetihyun' to perform a single. It's enough to think about making a similar project album. Sunny sang an OST for an OST and an animation, and has the potential for unique voice acting.

In the case of Sooyoung and Yuri, they appear in variety programs. Immediately, they snagged the MBC 'Show Music Core' MC's positions and will be coming to viewers every week. In various variety programs, they're active as guest MCs or invited guests due to their eloquence. In Sooyoung's case, she can also take a U-turn towards acting. Hyoyeon possesses superior dance skills.

Although SNSD has officially stopped activities, there's a high chance they'll be coming to fans and viewers individually. Of course, there's the problem that this won't bring in profit as just an album in today's music industry, but SNSD's at their highest marketable peak.

In the end, although the scene of 9 'girls' will disappear temporarily, there's a high chance that the explosive popularity of 'generation' will continue.

△ The quicker the alternative is found, the better = SNSD showed us how popular Gee was. Now the focus is on how long things can last. When you consider the plentiful idol singers who disappeared without a sound, it's better to find an alternative quickly.

In Thailand, SNSD's recognition is beyond imagination.
Truthfully, in Japan, there's countless groups with a concept similar to SNSD.

SNSD members must dream about their own alternatives. Focusing on satellite variety programs will wear one out, but to dilute the image of a singer, inevitably, requires excessive consumption. Some SNSD fans are able to meet them on TV often and despite positive aspects that are displayed, they worry.

First of all, if Taeyeon doesn't have a dream to become an expert DJ, then she should focus on her vocals. In foreign instances, singers with singing abilities as foundation who don't want to be temporary but long-term DJs, are rare phenomenons. They use their vocal chords everyday, and during live broadcasts, fatigue weighs on them.

When you compare the time of Taeyeon's debut to the present, you can see that there's been change in her vocals. The quality of her voice has deepened, but her voice volume and high pitch has become unstable, compared to when she debuted. Taeyeon has been called 'the most perfect idol' by fans and it'll be good for them to give her advice and constructive criticism on her DJ'ing.

In Jessica, Seohyun, Tiffany, and Sunny's case, they are recognized for their vocals once in a while but it's not enough. Before releasing a digital single, where friendly competition could ensue, featuring in singers' songs, or partaking in a lively OST, a singer must publicize their image. Sooyoung and Yuri should think of the successful variety MC Lee Hyori as their role models.

of course, SNSD's dedicated fans may think it's too early to be following my suggestions now. But the important thing is that SNSD's fandom doesn't want SNSD to disband. Although there's a tendency to do solo activities without disbanding in today's music industry, when SNSD members step out of their group role, they have the chance to have show their own personalities.

9: 'Music Bank' record for being No. 1 for 9 consecutive weeks

SNSD, on KBS 2TV's 'Music Bank', has set a record for being number 1 for 9 weeks with their title song, 'Gee'. Last year, in February, Jewelry with 'One More Time', set a record of being number 1 for 7 weeks and that record has been broken a year later. SM Entertainment, on the topic of SNSD's activity says, "The best outcome of 'Gee', is that regardless of age, it's receiving love from everyone." and "The fact that the 'SNSD's style' fashion and dance was a topic of discussion, is something that has changed this time around."

SNSD's Interview in Thailand

The dance steps for "Gee" are very cool, can you please dance a bit for us?

(The girls proceeded to perform "Gee")

Has Super Junior or SHINee talked to you about Thailand before?

Sunny: They both told us that the weather in Thailand was very hot and that we should wear short-sleeved T shirts. They also told us about the warm hospitality shown by the Thai fans and told us not to worry about our welcome reception at both the airport and the hotel but instead to concentrate on perfecting our performances. Both Super Junior and SHINee are extremely popular in Thailand so we treated them like sunbaenims when asking about Thailand.

Hyoyeon: I heard that Thailand's fruits are very delicious, and had always wanted to try them. Now that I'm in Thailand, I eat lots of them everyday and I love them very much.

How did you feel about yesterday's Pattaya International Music Festival?

Tiffany: We were very happy that the fans were so welcoming in their responses. As the Pattaya International Music Festival is a major event in Thailand, we were honoured to be here as Korea's representative. We had a very good time in Thailand, and we hope to come again next year for the festival.

Yuri: We sang "Gee" with the fans yesterday, and I was really excited and touched by all our fans.

Now that you are in Pattaya, what other interesting activities are you engaging in?

Sooyoung: Yesterday we rode on elephants which was a first for everyone. At first I was a bit fearful but once on the elephant it became very interesting! The zoo also had an elephant show, and I was so amazed at the intelligence shown by them.

Yuri: I went for a Thai massage yesterday... it was so comfortable that I wished I could do it again.

How do you feel about having your first official fan meeting in Thailand today?

Seohyun: I'm very excited and thankful to meet them. We've all wanted to come to Thailand as early as possible ever since we were amazed by videos of Thai fans dancing "Gee".

Since this is your 2nd time in Thailand, can you speak some Thai to us?

Seohyun: I'm very glad to meet each of you.

Hyoyeon: Let's sing a song together

Sunny: I love each and every one of you, I love you!

Yuri: I miss everyone very much. (laughs)

Jessica: Thank you very much.

Tiffany: Is everyone feeling happy?

Taeyeon: I love everyone.

Tiffany: (interjects) We will learn more in the future.

Lastly, please say something to your Thai fans.

Sooyoung: We are very happy to have our Thai fans because without your support and love, we wouldn't be able to clinch the top music spot in Thailand for 6 consecutive weeks. At the same time, we are very sorry for not being able to come to Thailand earlier, much as we would like to, due to our busy schedules in Korea. We hope that our Thai fans will support us forever into the future.

SNSD is popular in Thailand

Korean girl group SNSD, who was visiting Thailand for the second time, was warmly cheered on when they appeared on local television programs with the top two nationwide ratings. SNSD, who arrived in Thailand on the 20th, was representing Korea for the Pattaya International Music Festival 2009. The girls were featured on local terrestrial television channels such as Channel 9's "Nine Entertain" and Channel 7's "07 Show" on the 22nd, generating a wave of So Nyuh craze throughout the country.

Channel 9's "Nine Entertain", hosted by veteran Thai MCs Bao and Fan with more than 20 years of experience, is Thailand's most popular television program with ratings as high as 80% nationwide. The MCs introduced the girls by saying, "SNSD's Gee has occupied the top music spot in Korea for 9 consecutive weeks and 6 consecutive weeks currently in Thailand, proving the popularity of this girl group." In the episode featuring SNSD, Jessica was heard saying that she loved buying and eating food, prompting the MCs to unveil the prepared Thai desserts for the girls to have an unexpected tasting session. The girls then proceeded to spend an enjoyable time getting closer to the audience by sharing and sampling the desserts they had.

At Thailand's popular variety program "07 Show" with the second highest ratings nationwide, SNSD likewise made an appearance. Besides having a stage for SNSD's "Gee" performance, the program's MCs also engaged the girls in the famous Korean game called "Chamu chamu chamu (Really really really)" and endeared them to the audience through fun and laughter. On the same day's afternoon, the girls headed for their fan meeting in front of Bangkok's famous shopping centre, thus successfully concluding their 2nd visit to Thailand. SNSD will be returning to Korea on the 23rd, and will be concluding the last of their promotional activities with their farewell performance for "Gee" at SBS's "Inkigayo" music show on the 29th.

SNSD Backstage

[Behind the Scenes] What are the Nine SNSD Girls Like Backstage?

“Fighting” before going on stage

It really is ‘Girl Power,’ just like they say. The group So Nyuh Shi Dae, made up of nine cute girls, is blowing away Korea’s entertainment world. Their mini-album title track, “GEE” went on sale this past January, and have been on top on Mnet.com, Bugs, Melon, Cyworld, and other online music charts for two months. On KBS2’s “Music Bank,” they have been placing No. 1 for 8 straight weeks, rewriting Korean pop music history. In the variety world, the girls’ storm is fierce. As they say, “they appear whenever the TV is turned on,” featuring their lively and bubbly characteristics on many talk shows, quiz shows, and game shows, and all different types of shows no matter what the genre is. Not only that, but their “Crab-walk” dance and their alphabet “g” dance is being imitated by the public – male and female, young and old, and by celebrities, so much that they have become the “most imitated.” Also, their colourful skinny-jeans and simple T-shirt stage costumes are becoming a hit on online shopping malls, selling out incredibly fast. Even in the midst of SNSD’s big wave, all nine girls portray a cute, sexy, cool, and friendly personality.

Jessi is...

Then what are the nine girls like when they’re in their waiting rooms, and not on TV or on stage?

To answer this question, each SNSD member took self-cam portraits behind the stage and sent it to Sports Seoul. Recently, in the waiting room at MBC Music Core, they took Polaroid pictures of themselves, capturing their charm, just as it is.

“This is before going on stage~ >.<
It's Hyoyeon >_<+

SNSD is so busy that people say “they appear whenever the TV is turned on,” so the waiting room backstage is the most familiar space to them, besides their dorm. They rest, eat, do makeup, and most importantly wait for their next performance in their waiting room.

That day, SNSD came about 6 hours before their performance to get ready to go on stage. To pass the time and calm their nerves, the members were in the waiting room listening to new music or reading a book while other performers were in rehearsal. The members also chatted with each other to calm their nerves before going up on stage. After camera rehearsals, they didn’t forget to carefully monitor themselves and how the camera would capture them on TV. On this day, the girls were especially lively while they were playing with their self-cam photos. Even Yoona, who was sick with a cold, posed with a V and a smile for the camera, made sure the picture came out pretty, and drew heart and wrote a message on it.

“I caught a cold…” T__T

After finishing rehearsal.. ^^

The girls are already very pretty, but doing their last hair and makeup check before going on air is a must. The girls shared words of encouragement, saying “Yuri, you’re so pretty,” or “Yoona, your makeup turned out really well today,” and when somebody made a joke, everybody burst out in laughter. After a while, it was finally time for all the performing artists to stand on stage for the “deciding time”. Before going up for their ending stage performance and greeting all their fans, the members said, “Okay, let’s enjoy this performance with everything we have,” and gathered their hands together to cheer fighting.
